It does not light the room. It gives the evening something to hold.
A sprig of lily of the valley, stitched in raised thread, flowers across a cream shade: lilac-white bells, yellow hearts, olive leaves. Press the button switch at dusk and the shade turns to light. A small garden, kept for the evening.
Below it, a squat base of reddish-amber ash wood with a satin finish. Run a hand over the carving: a feathered acanthus leaf, a crescent curl, a band of slanted leaves.
